Safety

The Kindergarten promotes children’s safety, including physical and mental environment,
Providing safety for children, families and the wider community is imperative, therefore through a variety of actions, procedures and policies safety in all areas of Elizabeth East Kindergarten environment is actively implemented. This includes the provision of safe, but challenging, play equipment which encourages the use of children’s problem solving skills as well as resilience. In case of a health emergency the ambulance will be called. It is recommended that parents have ambulance cover. If you believe that there is some aspect of safety which needs to be improved please let us know.

Arrival and departure

Parents are required to sign in their child’s arrival and departure time on the sign in sheet. Any changes to children’s sessions must first be discussed with the Director. The children must be supervised by parents, and cannot be left on their own before kindy starts.
When bringing or picking up your children to or from the kindergarten please make sure that you are careful when opening the door and or gate. Some other children might try to sneak in or out. Make sure that the gate is closed behind you.

Emergency contact

You must notify us if someone unfamiliar is collecting your child from kindy. The person collecting your child will be asked to produce the ID which might be photocopied.  If possible plan in advance and introduce emergency contact people to the staff. If you did not inform the staff about new emergency person collecting your child, your child will not be released (we will contact the Police for support and advice). This is in accordance with the Department for Education ‘Acceptance and Refusal of Authorisations Policy’ (https://www.education.sa.gov.au/doc/acceptance-and-refusal-authorisations).

If a child is not picked up and no emergency contact can be reached, the Police as well as Emergency Crisis Care will be notified and further decisions will be made accordingly.
Parents need to advise Elizabeth East Kindergarten staff about any personal information changes. The “Child’s information change” forms are available on our website and also at kindy.

UV

Sunscreen is provided for children at the kindergarten. The staff will assist children in applying sunscreen after lunch. Children attending a ½ day at kindergarten will apply sunscreen at home before coming to the centre. If a child is allergic to the sunscreen provided at kindy, parents need to supply their own sunscreen.

Administration of medicine

According to DECD policy - Staff can give medication with a signed approval form from the child’s doctor and parents. Bottles/tablets have to be sealed. All medication (including asthma puffers) need to be given to staff to be stored safely.

Early childhood vaccine procedure

From term 1 2017 parents and carers with children enrolled in a government preschool, rural care, occasional care, family day care or respite care service will be asked to provide evidence of their child’s immunisation status under a new procedure aimed at protecting children against vaccine preventable diseases (VPD).

If a child is not up to date with their immunisations and there is an occurrence of a vaccine preventable disease at the service, their parents or care givers will be asked to keep their child away from the service for a period of time which is known as an exclusion period.

Children who have a medical reason for not being vaccinated are required to have a general practitioner complete an exemption form. A completed copy should be provided to the site or service.

Changing children

The educators will assist the kindergarten children while they are changing or they will call parents for assistance. In case of a health issue where a continence plan is signed and prepared by a professional health provider, the educator will follow the plan when helping children.

Unwell children

Children presenting as ill or with infectious disease will be sent home. An ambulance will be called for all emergencies. The fee for ambulance is payable by the parent, therefore it is recommended that parents have ambulance cover. On child’s return, a doctor’s certificate might be requested. Please note the educators will make the decision (the most appropriate/informed under the circumstances at the time) to call parents/ambulance to attend to the child.
